during world war ii. and that's when a grenade blast blew off most of his right arm. president obama attending a memorial service for the late senator in honolulu over the weekend. the first numbers from the holiday shopping season are in. and they are not good. the worse since 2008, in fact, a master card spending pulse report. finding holiday retail sales rose by less than 1% from last june. that's barely moving. most analysts had predicted a 3% to 4% increase. even online sales which had been growing slowed down dramatically. experts blamed several factors including worries fiscal cliff. the bad weather definitely played a role as well. especially super storm sandy, whatever the cause, bad holiday numbers mean bad news in general for the economy. overall many retailers make almost half their sales for the year during the month of november and december. gerri willis from the fox business network now to break it down for us. retailers slash prices. they threw all sorts of deals out there. >> 30%, 40%, 50%, almost 75% at some retail stores. falling consumer confidence. people worried

on entitlement reform on spending cuts. >> well, that's right. president obama believed and the democrats believe they have a mandate after the election. now, a mandate, you know, depends what you call a mandate. the election was not really close, but it wasn't also a grand slam for the democrats either. so there's a real difference in who -- what the mandate is here. and democrats don't feel they need to compromise. i think they think if we go over the fiscal cliff, they will have even stronger negotiating power. that remains to be seen because oftentimes when taxes go up and there is something that hits the economy really hard and puts it into a tailspin, it's the president who takes the blame. so i think even the president is wondering who's going to foot the blame for this one. but at this point i think the democrats feel they have the upper hand at this moment. if they hold tight, they will force the republicans to capitulate. i don't see that happening. i think both sides are really going to have to give in before we get a final deal. jon: so we'll have to see, you know, which side wins the

holiday and at this point there's not a lot of time left and hopes for a grand bargain, president obama and house speaker boehner had been working on have all but evaporated right now. making sure that the steep tax hikes don't go in to effect. president obama on friday saying he would accept a deal as long as it does not allow taxes to go up on middle class americans, as long as it extends unemployment insurance and lays the groundwork for deficit reduction in the future. so there's sort of scaling back their expectations. house speaker boehner tried to get an alternative bill passed through the house last week. that failed. the focus shifts to the senate. reid and mcconnell will really be charged with trying to hammer out the fine details of that deal that can make it through the senate and through the house so that is the challenge moving forward. of course, president obama here in hawaii for his christmas cray case. he played some golf over the weekend. also, attended the memorial service for the late senator daniel inouye. thomas, on a much lighter note, he asked me had i taken my

better. there's a reason why obama is leading this thing right now. he won the election. he now has the right, morally and politically to force his version of a deal upon people. we also have to consider the dynamics of congress. you know, boehner is going to be coming up to a speaker election january 3rd. all it will require is 17 republicans to overthrow him if they don't support him. that is a tiny number. you could argue this is inherently unstable. you could argue that maybe we're going to get it. some talk about bringing him an outside speaker like john huntsman. and i don't see that happening. but you get a sense of anything could happen in this system. >> and maybe it's a benefit. maybe in the long-term, but certainly right now there does seem to be a sense that it is a small group of people holding the rest of the process hostage. >> oh, yes. i'm trying to find something good to say about something. because the alternative is china, you know? i'd rather have a -- >> is that the case, though? is there not an alternative that you see and other examples as you look whether it'
